Sony to push Blu-ray for PS3 instead of price cuts this Christmas

Future price cuts will be in order once Sony has better established PS3 as an industry standard Blu-ray player

Sony Computer Entertainment is well aware of the speculation surrounding the PlayStation 3's pricing, but chief Kazuo Hirai admits his company will be prioritizing elsewhere for its holiday season strategy. Specifically, the name of the game will be pushing PS3 as a Blu-ray player to attract Christmas sales before announcing any further official price cuts.

Sony would rather build confidence by establishing a stronger lineup of game titles in order to make additional price cuts even more attractive. That said, Hirai reportedly explained that he nevertheless thinks about PS3 pricing "every single day" (source).

"The PS3 is first and foremost a video games machine but we want to say ? by the way, it's a great Blu-ray player as well," Mr Hirai said. Marketing efforts in the US, Europe and Japan would highlight the PS3 as a Blu-ray disc player as well.

"Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me," he said. A price cut would have a "real impact" on sales only if there were enough software titles to support the PS3.

Seems as though the movie industy is leaning more toward HD though, and anyone that is looking at game systems allready knows about the BluRay in the PS3 and for the price difference would rather go with 360 that plays HD discs for $100+ less.

The 360 requires a separate player, the 360 also doesn't do HDMI.

That is the definite knock to the 360. I have thought from early on that HD would win the war unless the PS3 could save Blu-ray.

Until Sony really cuts prices on the PS3 and increases stock, you won't see much inroads.

Sony is digging a grave for the PS3 with this nonsense. The system is already crippled enough right now with the lack of software.. unless they can start improving vastly whether it be the software or high price(s), it won't stand a chance.

And while we're at it, let's please not forget which <u>exclusive</u> 360 game hits store shelves tomorrow. Here's a hint: It starts with an 'H' and is one of the most popular shooters of all time. If you can't guess the answer by now, come out from under that rock and get some fresh air!

There's just really no reason to buy a PS3 at this point. I'm not bashing the console just because I want to be an ass, I'm just speaking the truth. It's looking more and more grim for the big black machine.
